Why is fall the best time for cattail treatment?

Fall is the best time to treat your cattails for many reasons, but primarily because of the coming winter season. Once cattails are cut below the water level, the root system becomes flooded with water, causing them to rot and die out. Root systems under the water level are then frozen beneath a layer of ice as lakes begin to freeze over. This ice layer prevents them from oxygenating, halting early regrowth. This maintenance also helps to prepare your lakeshore for spring and summer, reducing the volume of weeds you may experience come June.

Will my cattails regrow in the spring?

Another good reason to cut your cattails in the fall is that it also prevents the plant from storing carbohydrates in its stalk or rhizomes, which would allow unmanaged plants to survive the winter. These rhizomes produce shoots that can flourish come growing season in the spring. While it is typical to see some regrowth, annual, or biannual maintenance is the best way to control your cattails. However, as a majority of the work is completed in our first visit, after our initial visit maintenance is extremely manageable.

Cattail removal is an extremely labor-intensive process, but one can greatly improve the aesthetics and recreational abilities of your lakefront. Not only that but removing the cattails around our lakefront can improve your home’s property value.
